Verónica Matiz is a Colombian contemporary sculptor whose work transforms industrial steel into fluid, organic forms. Born in Bogotá in 1984, she trained in Florence, Italy, and later completed a master’s degree in visual arts in Colombia. Her artistic process blends traditional craftsmanship with a deep fascination for nature, geometry, and architectural space.
Working primarily with steel sheets of various calibers, Matiz folds, bends, and sculpts metal as if it were paper. Each piece is shaped through pure welding rather than assembly, resulting in unique sculptures that balance opposing forces: softness and rigidity, the organic and the industrial, the dynamic and the serene. Many of her works are finished with electrostatic color, adding depth and vibrancy to their layered, three-dimensional forms.
Nature is the starting point of her creative process. Through sketches, models, and experimentation with scale, Matiz develops sculptures that evoke shells, wings, petals, and fluid geometric rhythms. Her work often interacts with architectural environments, reflecting her vision of sculpture as part of the spaces people inhabit.
Matiz’s sculptures have been exhibited both in Colombia and internationally, including notable presentations in Florence and at the Museum Edgar Negret. Her work continues to grow in visibility, recognized for its unique ability to bring warmth, elegance, and movement to one of the most rigid materials in art.
