Maria Esther Panesso Mercado

María Esther Panesso Mercado (b. August 28, 1987, Bogotá, Colombia) is a Colombian visual artist internationally recognized for emotionally powerful paintings that explore feminine strength, memory, and spiritual resilience. She signs her work simply as “Mercado.”
Born in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia—a country known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant landscapes, and profound artistic traditions—Mercado’s work reflects the emotional depth and resilience that characterize much of Colombian identity. Her artistic language is deeply influenced by her personal history and the social realities of her homeland.
She lost her father at a young age and was raised by a mother who became the head of the household. This formative experience profoundly shaped her understanding of feminine strength, resilience, and legacy—central themes that permeate her work. In her paintings, women are not portrayed as fragile figures, but as sacred and powerful presences embodying memory, endurance, and transformation.
In addition to her artistic career, Mercado holds degrees in Law and International Business Administration, as well as an MBA. She has dedicated part of her professional life to advocating for and defending women in vulnerable situations in Colombia. This commitment to justice and dignity is deeply intertwined with her artistic practice, where the female figure becomes a symbol of spiritual force, resilience, and identity.
She works primarily with oil, acrylic, and textured mixed media, creating paintings that juxtapose richly textured surfaces with smooth, luminous human forms. A recurring subject in her work is the ballet dancer, through whom she explores the profound dualities of womanhood. Ballet serves as a powerful metaphor: dancers endure intense physical discipline and often perform on injured feet, yet rise gracefully on pointe, appearing effortless and luminous on stage. This contrast between visible beauty and hidden sacrifice mirrors the inner world of women—capable of carrying pain, responsibility, and emotion while presenting strength, grace, and dignity to the world.
Her work frequently depicts ballet dancers, symbolic feminine figures, and women inspired by Colombian cultural heritage, illuminated by dramatic light and metallic elements. These compositions create a visual dialogue between movement, identity, and transcendence, celebrating the quiet resilience and inner power that define the feminine experience.
Mercado’s work has been exhibited internationally in major cultural capitals including Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, Miami, and New York. She exhibited at the historic Salon d’Automne in Paris, founded in 1903 and known for presenting artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Her work has also been shown at Rockefeller Center in New York, and in 2023 she was featured for two consecutive days on the Nasdaq screen in Times Square, further solidifying her presence on the international stage.
In recognition of her creative impact, Forbes Colombia named her one of the “50 Most Creative Colombians in the World.”
In April 2026, Mercado will present her work at Art Expo New York, one of the leading contemporary art fairs in the United States, marking another milestone in her expanding international career.
Through her work, Mercado seeks to honor the spiritual lineage of women, celebrate resilience, and represent Colombia with dignity on the global art scene.
